SAMBA, Mar 5: Notwithstanding its tall claims to raise the standard of education in the state, the Education Department has failed to make any difference even at primary level. Most of the schools in far flung areas of Samba district are facing shortage of staff affecting the academic activities.
The glittering examples are the Government Primary School, Kapahi and Madoon in Samba.
Having strength of 60 students, primary school of Kapahi in hilly terrain of Samba is being run by two teachers. Besides shortage of staff, students in the school are obliged to sit on floor as the department has failed to provide desks for the school.
"The people of the area many a times approached the education authorities seeking more staff but nothing has been done so far. The schools in far off areas have been suffering due to lack of staff as teachers manage their posting in easily accessible areas, said Purshotam Kumar," local resident of Kapahi village.
"My child is studying here for the last four years. The school was started with two teachers and till date department has not appointed additional teacher despite massive increase in the number of students. The non-availability of adequate teachers is badly affecting the studies of the students," said Puran Chand, another resident.
"Cultivation is the only source of income in our region; most parents can't afford to send their children to private schools away from their villages. The parents have no other choice but to send their children to government schools, he added.
Similar is the story of Government Primary school at Madoon in Samba, where for 16 students there is only a single teacher.
The teacher, who also doing administrative and clerical work putting additional burden on her which also affecting the studies of the pupils.
"Government Primary School in Madoon Panchayat has been facing dearth of staff since last. Initially five teachers were posted in school. But now only one teacher is running the school. Despite acute shortage of teaching staff in several schools of the area, several teachers have been attached in different administrative offices at the cost of proper functioning of schools", said Darshan Singh, local Sarpanch, adding that most of the government schools were either without headmasters or left entirely on the mercy of the contractual staff.
By ignoring the staff crunch in schools, department has put the career of students at stake. We make a fervent appeal to higher authorities to resolve the issue at the earliest, he said. |
