Srinagar, Mar 5: Decision of former separatist leader and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone not to join the ministries allocated to him has not gone well with the people of Kashmir and different people have attached varied reasons for the same.
People in general believe that Sajad has taken this decision since not many funds are available in the ministries allocated to him. The common masses said that Sajad should have joined the government so that he could have delivered on the ground. They said that Sajad could have been given better responsibility if he performed well at the initial level.
"Sajad is the first time legislator and as such he has to start from low key ministries and departments. How can he be given a bigger responsibility as it was for the first time that he got elected to the legislative assembly? It would be prudent for him to join the government and do his bit for the people more so those belonging to his constituency," said a group of people while sharing their views with Early Times.
This group of people said that since MLA Handwara has been given portfolio out of the quota of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) he should take a look at the ministries given to the other elected people of party. They said barring a few departments most of the plum ministries have gone into the kitty of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislators.
"Barring ministries like Power Development Department, Housing, Health and Industries & Commerce, the BJP legislators have been given less significant ministries. This should act as an eye-opener for people like Sajad Lone so that they join their ministries and get on with the job assigned to them," said this group of people.
Since most of the BJP legislators got elected for the first time in the 2014 assembly elections it was due to this reason that the party could not bargain for the more important portfolios or ministries. As such the party had to play second fiddle to PDP when it comes to power sharing in the state.
"Most of the PDP legislators have been elected to the assembly in the past as well and as such they were given important ministries or portfolios as compared to their BJP counterparts. In other words we can say that PDP is calling the shots in the government with BJP relegated to the second spot," said the people.
It would be in place to mention here that senior PDP leader and MLA Bijbehara, Abdul Rehman Bhat (Veeri) too has expressed his displeasure over the allocation of less important portfolios like Haj, Auqaf and Horticulture to him. He too has not joined his ministries and has written to PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti over this development.
On the other hand Sajad was given the portfolios of Science & Technology and Animal Husbandry. But he has not yet joined the government and is waiting for a 'better treatment'.
