Govt assures action against sub-standard Pesticides, Fertilizer supplies | Mafia exploiting pitfall in legislation | | Javaid Naikoo
Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 5: Taking cognizance of large scale complaints by Orchardists/Farmers of sub-standard pesticides and Fertilizers being supplied in the market, the new government has assured quick, decisive action against the mafia. After assuming his Charge as Minister for Agriculture and Production, People's Democratic Party (PDP) Minister of the coalition Government, Ghulam Nabi Lone while talking to Early Times said that 'Menace of Substandard pesticides and Fertilizers which is going on without any check Jammu and Kashmir over the years will be completely uprooted and people behind this unlawful business will be punished according to law of the land. "I shall chair a meeting of officials in this regard to curb this menace from the state, I will be personally visiting Markets, conducting raids of stores which dump Substandard pesticides and Fertilizers . I assure you quick, decisive action ,"added the Minister. He also said that Pesticides, fertilizer and Soil testing labs of Lal Mandi Srinagar which were washed away by Floods of September last will be established with all the facilities required right before the season of Agricultural activities starts in Kashmir and added that in this regard his government has already issued tenders. It is worthwhile to mention that as per records year 2014 was the fourth consecutive year of falling Apple production due to sub standard pesticides, a fertilizers being supplied in the markets by vested interests. Citing discrepancies in the existing legislations, Director Agriculture, Peerzada Mushtaq Ahamd said that fish oil and various substandard pesticides and Fertilizers available in markets cannot be banned as according them such Pesticides and Fertilizers do not fall in insecticide act of India 1968. According to sources dumping of substandard fish oil which is used as first tree spray oil is being supplied by a well knit mafia which exploits the pitfall in the legislation to loot the farmers. Pertinently at a time when lot of hue and cry which include protests of orchardists against supply of substandard tree spray oil and pesticides, no concrete measures were taken by the previous coalition government to curb the menace. |
