Board's decision to conduct examination in snow draws flak from students, parents | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 16: With the valley witnessing massive snowfall from midnight, the decision of the State Board of School Education (SBOSE) to go ahead with today's EVS paper of 12th class took everybody by surprise, especially the parents of the candidates. As it was already predicted by MET department that the valley will experience another heavy spell of snowfall, the SBOSE authorities didn't announce the postponement of the examination scheduled for the day. "We had no doubt that examination of EVS paper scheduled for today will be postponed as it began snowing heavily from the midnight. I remained convinced that the announcement regarding the postponement of the examination will be announced early in the morning, but that was not to be," said Fayaz Ahmad from Arizal, Beerwah. Fayaz went on saying that when the announcement wasn't made till 10 in the morning he was left with no choice, but leave for the examination centre on foot through the freshly accumulated snow much to the concerns of my parents. My parents insisted me, as he went on saying, not to bother about the examination and sit at home because they were worried about my safety. Many candidates couldn't make it to the examination centres at all and they missed the today's paper due to the sheer negligence of Board authorities. This cheap act of the authorities has brought frustration in the minds of the aspirants. "Given the three feet of fresh snow and still snowing how do you expect the candidates to reach the examination centres? Aren't the board officials living in Kashmir understand the gravity of the situation," said Javaid Ahmad from South Kashmir. Such was the intensity of the snowfall that at many centres the supervising staff also couldn't make it to the examination centres, said Javaid. The board officials who make routine rounds of the examination centres also couldn't pay surprise visits to the snow bound areas. Reports of unfair means at some centres due to the dearth of supervising staff have come in from some of the areas. Chairperson State Board of School education, Veena Pandita said the weather situation was not bad that would have prompted them to postpone the examination of today's paper. She said that those candidates who missed today's paper need to give application on the plain paper to the concerned sub-offices for the re-examination. She added that examination of additional/optional subject of the 10th class scheduled forMarch 17 has been postponed. |
