Release of Political prisoners in J&K | AICC, JKPCC singing in different tunes | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 16: Pradesh Congress Committee has embarrassed the Congress high command by toeing exactly contradictory line over the release of political prisoners in J&K. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) which cornered the union government over the release of the separatist Masarat Alam, saying the BJP had compromised its stated position for the petty political gains, its newly appointed state chief and the former tourism minister is these days pitching for the release of the political prisoners, asking government to withdraw the cases slapped earlier against the political detainees. This double speak of the six decade old party has not only exposed its intentions before the public but has also made them understand that this party cares more about the results and least about the means to achieve them. The statement of G.A. Mir, the state Congress chief, came after his detailed meeting with the AICC president Sonia Gandhi at New Delhi. Mir after reaching valley told reporters: "Government should review cases of all the prisoners jailed without proper trial rather than getting influenced by political pressure. There shouldn't be any favoritism on the basis of level and support of the prisoner," he said. On the other hand, Congress on Sunday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is a coalition partner of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir, is equally responsible for separatist leader Masarat Alam's release."Governments have a joint responsibility and BJP is equally responsible," said Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma told the reporters. Interestingly, Mir was making the statement seeking release of political prisoners in J&K when his high command was sharpening knives against the BJP. Mir while declaring that the government tried to seek 'political mileage' out of Alam's release, didn't utter a word against the move. Rather he went a step forward saying, "The present PDP-BJP coalition government should release all the prisoners detained unnecessarily in jails" As per the state Congress sources, Mir didn't violate any direction from the high command rather he parroted what he was asked to. After the thorough discussions and deliberations at 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi, the Congress had asked Mir not to leave any space for the national conference as an opposition party and continue to strive for relevance. Sources said that the Congress with a unifying approach has asked Mir to put the cadres in the state together and not to leave any space for the lobbyism again. It was only after Mir meeting Taj and Monga that the two posed for the photograph together- revealing 'United they stand.' Earlier, the bitter relations between the different groups in the Congress party had led to its downfall in the state, squeezing it to mere 12 seats with its 'big wigs' losing the battle in 2014 from most promising turfs. |
