Poor performance of PWD in Doda | In 4 yrs only 2 km earthwork done on Punej- Bhallara link road | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 11: The dismal performance of Public Work Department (PWD) in district Doda can be gauged from the fact that even after the lapse of four years it has only completed two kilometre of earthwork out of a total of 7-km-long Punej- Bhallara link road. Romesh Manhas, sarpanch of Bhallara panchyat, said that four years back state government had approval link road from Punej to Bhallara at an estimated cost of Rs 2.83 cr. The total length of this road is seven and a half kilometre but the lackadaisical approach of concerned officials has resulted in the completion of only two kilometre earthwork. He said in 2012-13, the department had floated tender of one kilometer road but within days the tender was cancelled for unknown reasons. "The department again floated tender for two kilometre road stretch. The work was allotted to a contractor but even after the lapse of more than six months, the work is yet to start", the sarpanch said, adding that many times people urged the PWD officials to commence the construction work of this road but every time they returned them with fake assurances. "Earlier the department had been making excuses that the forest department was not giving the clearance for cutting green trees but a few months back it had paid to the latter an amount of Rs 50 lakh for the purpose", said another resident of Bhallara. In the absence of road link, people have to cover miles on foot to reach the main road. Students, especially girls, were facing hardships in the absence of the road link. They hoped that the new government would direct the concerned authorities to speed up the construction work on the Punej-Bhallara road. When contacted, PWD executive engineer Kundal Kumar said as the forest department didn't give them clearance, the road construction work had to be stopped. The construct would start as soon as the directions were issued to them by the higher authorities, he added. |
