Kashmir protests ploy to sabotage return of Pandits? | 1990s like situation re-emerging | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 18: Since the day government has announced that return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley would be facilitated with dignity and honour street protests have gained momentum in Kashmir. Waving of Pakistan flags and anti-India protests have returned to the streets of Kashmir and situation like nineties seems to be emerging. Soon after the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed announced that government has worked out a plan to resettle Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave their home land in 1990, separatists and their sympathizers announced that they won't allow government to build separate townships for KPs and would oppose the move tooth and nail. Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani after his return from New Delhi earlier this week seems to have taken the command. Massive anti-India rally was organized in uptown here on Geelani's return and Pakistan flags were waved to welcome him. Soon after his return, Geelani called for protests and Tral chalo march against the killing of a youth, who died in cross firing between militants and army, earlier this week. Outraged at government not allowing Tral chalo march and Police arresting his close confidant Masrat Alam, Geelani called for protests and shutdown on Saturday. Worst fears of people came true this morning when a youth was killed in forces firing at Narbal on Srinagar-Gulmarg road. One more killing has provided yet another chance to separatists to call for a shutdown and protests. Amidst din, facilitating the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley seems to have been pushed at the back burner as entire focus of the government machinery has shifted to curb protests and maintaining law and order. A top police official while talking to Early Times said, "We have received the inputs that separatists have activated their sleeper cells and they are regrouping their activists and workers to orchestrate street protests and provoke people to take to the streets so that one more agitation is triggered." Sources said that soon after Geelani returned from Delhi, Masrat Alam, apprised him about the plan formulated by him to create 2010 like situation. "Alam's arrest would help in diffusing the situation," they added. The BJP National Secretary Shrikant Sharma while talking to reporters in Delhi said Kashmir protests are a part of a "conspiracy" to stall return of Kashmiri Pandits. "The Kashmir protests are part of a greater conspiracy to prevent the resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley," Sharma said. Without naming Separatists, Sharma said that BJP would not let 'disturbing elements' to hijack the "Unity and Integrity" of the nation. "We will not let the return of Pandits be stalled, unity and integrity of the nation is more important than being in power" Sharma added. A PDP leader said that Chief Minister and his colleagues have taken a serious note of the emerging situation and separatists won't be allowed to trigger unrest in the Valley. "PDP-BJP coalition is committed to ensure return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley and won't allow anyone to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in Kashmir," he added. |
