Terrified Sopore residents fail to discharge religious obligations during Ramadan | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 20 : The recent attacks on telecommunication towers followed by 'target' killings has taken a heavy toll on the activities related to the holy month of Ramadan in the Sopore town of North Kashmir. Many people who feel a threat to their lives have fled the town with no plans of immediate return. The mosques in the town are witnessing a very thin attendance of the worshippers despite the fact that it is the holy month of Ramadan in effect. "People are so much terrified that most of them offer the prayers at home particularly the morning and evening prayers. It is simply the terror that has been created by the target killings, consuming the lives of four people in a week's time," said Bashir Ahmad Dar from Sopore. As per Bashir, as the darkness sets in, it is the fearsome atmosphere that grips almost entire town, forcing the people to remain confined to homes. People are so much terrified that they pay no attention to the evening calls from the mosques, said Bashir. While separatists blame the agencies for the killings and the police blame the militants, it is the common people who are undecided about how to carry the life forward. Everybody in the volatile town now thinks that he could be the next target. "My business has been affected very badly since I am unable to serve the people till late in the night because of the threat of target killing that still looms large in the town. I am left with no choice but to close my shop much earlier," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a meat seller. People of the town say that what has added to their fears are the suspicious movements during the nights. People of the town say that they hear the knocking at their doors in the dead of the night, making them scared about their lives. "The situation in the town has turned from bad to worse because of the unusual things that are taking place in the town now. Now the doors of the houses are being knocked at during the night thus harming the people psycho-physically. Virtually we have lost the means of joy," said Shabir Ahmad. Shabir says that with the increase in the militancy related incidents in the town, the movement of the security forces has also picked up. The town is presenting the picture of a garrison. This is one more reason as to why there is no buzz in the mosques of the town, Shabir went on saying. |
