Geelani's condemnation, Mirwaiz's silence raises brows | ISIS flag row | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 20: The recent episodes of hoisting of ISIS flags here have raised eyebrows on separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as investigating agencies are probing his role into the hoisting, Early Times learnt from top sources. The Hurriyat-M Chairman Mirwaiz, at whose rallies the ISIS flags were waived last week, has been conspicuous for his silence even as his arch rival and hardliner Syed Ali Geelani, who heads the other Hurriyat has condemned the flag hoisting. On June 12, after Mirwaiz delivered his weekly Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid, some masked youth waved ISIS flags. This hogged the headlines. A day after the incident, on June 13 Geelani reacted sharply though the incident had happened at the rally of his rivals. Expressing displeasure over the hoisting of ISIS flags, he said "such instances provide a handle to defame the ongoing struggle in Kashmir". "Waving of ISIS flags during peaceful demonstrations is against discipline and also negates our strategy. Such things provide a handle to India to defame our legitimate freedom struggle," Geelani said in a statement. "ISIS and other like-minded groups, whatever their agenda and strategy, have nothing to do with Kashmir. The people of Kashmir are fighting for their right of self-determination and not pursuing any international programme," Geelani said. But Mirwaiz has not uttered a word in reaction. Infact he has been avoiding to reply such questions than to talk of having issued a formal statement to condemn the act. A police official said Mirwaiz's silence has raised questions over his involvement in the waving of flags of the internationally banned militant outfit which has unleashed terror in the Middle-East. "Investigators are trying to ascertain what is the reason behind Mirwaiz silence… Even though in 2014 he condemned incidents of ISIS flag waving , his silent this time is intriguing ," said a police official pleading anonymity. "Definitely we are trying to ascertain if Mirwaiz is behind this all and why," the police official said in reply to a question. Last Friday a group of youth, with faces covered, carried a black banner of Islamic State flag as they marched from Jamia Masjid towards Nowhatta chowk in downtown Srinagar soon after the congregational prayers, officials said. They said Pakistani flags were also hoisted by some youth in the area before police swung into action and chased away the protestors. While police said over a dozen youth are under scanner over the waving of the controversial flags, Mirwaiz role is being more seriously probed. |
