KU's RTI section saddens students | | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq
SRINAGAR, July 9: Despite the lapse of 39 days, Public Information Officer, Kashmir University, couldn't provide information to an RTI activist in a time bound manner. Neither the RTI section had given any receipt or information to the applicant, nor did they have any knowledge about the J&K RTI Act. This whole drama has put the applicants in a state of melancholy. According to sources, after the declaration of 3rd year results in May 2015, many students failed and some got repairs in one or two subjects which has not satisfied them in one or the other way. Applicants filed RTI in various subjects of their choice and they tried to seek xerox copies of their answer sheets from their concerned departments, so that they could see if it was their inefficiency or something else, said sources. A final year student of Government Women's Degree College Baramulla, has not only lost precious time but missed the prestigious exams where she was eager to appear after getting the confirmation from the concerned departments. Nazia Nabi, a final year student of Women's Degree College Baramulla told Early Times that, "I filed RTI application for Chemistry paper in RTI Section of Kashmir University on June 1 but I was not given any receipt. I was told to call back on Mohammad Ashraf's perhaps (PIO's) No 9622531224 after twenty five days." She said she almost called him a hundred times but he always said that, yet we have not received xerox copy of your paper, you keep calling me. Another applicant wished not to be named said that she had also filed RTI application but was not provided any information so for, due to which I couldn't appear in entrance exams of Kashmir university. However sources said that repeated excuses itself shows that perhaps RTI section of Kashmir University is lacking of information about RTI, which has not only wasted the time of hundreds of applicants but has ruined the career of efficient students so for. RTI activist Rasikh Rasool said, "There is a provision under J&K Right to Information (RTI) Act that PIO has to provide information to the applicant under section 7, which states that, "the disposal of request which reads the public information officer on receipt of request under section 6 shall as expeditiously as possible." Irony of the fact is that despite the lapse of 39 days applicant was not given any information nor was intimated that the application was rejected. But this whole drama has exposed the work culture of RTI section of Kashmir University which has put the applicants in a state of melancholy and disturbance. |
