SRINAGAR, July 9: Police used force and arrested dozens of employees of Urban Local Bodies department while they were carrying out protest today against the SROs issued with respect to amalgamation of municipal committees of Pahalgam and Gulmarg in the respective development authorities. As part of its programme the employees of the Urban Local Bodies department assembled at the Pratap Park here to register protest against the SROs issued by the Housing and Urban Development Department. The protesters were led by Chairman of his faction of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) Abdul Qayoom Wani. EJAC leaders Manzoor Ahmad Pampori, Farooq Ahmad Trali and Shabir Ahmad Langoo were also part of the protest demonstration. From Pratap Park the protesters marched towards the Press Colony and registered protests against the issuance of the two SROs. Talking to media persons Qayoom warned of agitation in case the government did not roll back the orders issued with respect to amalgamation of municipal committees of Pahalgam and Gulmarg in the respective development authorities. The protesters had plans to walk through the main road in the city so as to make the people aware about the ramifications and consequences of the two SROs issued by the concerned department. The employees had plans to involve different sections of society in the protest so that it could gain the momentum of a civil disobedience movement. As soon as the protesters started their march they were intercepted by the huge posse of police that had been put in place in order to avert any eventuality. The police personnel resorted to mild lathi-charge on the protesters and the situation turned volatile for some time. The EJAC leaders including Qayoom and Manzoor were also taken into custody by the police and whisked away to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station. Referring to the police action as uncalled for and unwarranted, Chairman Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) Manzoor Ahmad Pampori said the employees wanted to raise their voice against the two SROs issued with regard to municipal committees of Pahalgam and Gulmarg.
"There was no need to stop us from carrying out the protest march. We wanted to make the people as a whole aware about the consequences of the two SROs issued. However, the police personnel resorted to highhandedness and did not allow us to march through the main roads. More than 70 employees and EJAC leaders were arrested by police and taken to the nearby police station," said Manzoor.
