Polluted water of local streamlet spells doom for 'aquatic life'

Kathua, July 9: Taking serious note of the mysterious death of fishes in Wajoo Nallah of Nagri in Kathua district due to alleged water pollution, the District Development Committee (DDC) Kathua has asked officials from Pollution Control Board to probe the matter and also constituted a high level committed headed by ADC Dr Mushtaq Ahmed to probe the matter.
As per official sources, the J&K Department of Fisheries in its report had revealed that the fishes died in this local streamlet just because of water pollution.
Reliable sources within Fisheries department said, "The department had submitted the report to DDC Kathua clarifying that the cause of water pollution is industrial water which is diverted to Wajoo Nallah by some vested interested business entrepreneurs.
"During the investigation the departmental team found the color of water changed at different places and it is attributed to the concentration of chemical waste being added to water at different places from the industrial area," sources said. They added that highly toxic industrial water comes through Kathua Khad and finally flows to water of Wajoo Nallah.
"The department report also indicated that villagers too had complained of some water born diseases affecting lives of humans as well cattle in downstream areas, sources said further adding that however the technical report in this regard is yet awaited.
Seeking anonymity, a department officer of Fisheries said that Bajoo Nallah was having continuous flow of fresh water throughout the year. Nevertheless, the polluted water flowing from industrial has destroyed the bio-diversity. "The fish species in this streamlet are different and is of natural habitat which yet has not been reproduced manually, he said.
The officer further revealed that DDC had taken serious note of departmental report and had asked Pollution Control Board Officers to check the matter and initiate action.
Pertinent to mention here that after repeated protest demonstrations by the locals regarding the mysterious death of fishes, the District Development Commissioner Kathua Ajay Singh Jamwal today called a meeting of officers in this regard.
During meeting DDC constituted a committee headed by ADC Kathua Dr Mushtaq Ahmed comprising General Manager DIC, District Officer Pollution Control Board, AD Fisheries, Project Manager SICOP and EO Municipality will investigate the matter and submit report to DDC Kathua.
