7/9/2015 11:21:18 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 9: In an emergency meeting the Consumer Welfare Assn (CWA) the members expressed their concerns over the suffering 'Consumer Cause' on account of withdrawal of powers of Health Officer, JMC/SMC as Designated Officers, to be in charge 'Food Safety Administration' for JMC/SMC areas and demanded from concerned Commissioners to empower them.
During the meeting members pointed out the existing staff with Drug Control Dept is too small and utterly inadequate to match with the quantum of work they are supposed to handle and at the same time in all other states of the country all Health Officers of the Municipal Corporations have been nominated as Designated Officers who are duly authorized to implement the provisions of the Food Safety and Standard Act of 2006.
The members therefore urged the government that to protect the interest of the consumers the Commissioner, Food Safety J&K shall restore the powers of Health Officers of both JMC and SMC as Designated Officers of Food Safety to protect the interest of the Consumers.
Vikram Gour, President CWA informed the members Deputy Commissioner, Jammu is taking keen interest in activating the enforcement agencies to keep strict check on quality, quantity and rates of the essential commodities. DC Jammu also had informed that soon it will be possible for the consumers to get the rates of the essential commodities (on demand) through SMS, President SWA said.
Speakers including Er Ashok Koul, Er SK Gupta, Er SC Sharma, Chander Gulati, Chander Parkash Sharma, JK Khajuria and Chander Udhey Sharma also raised the issues of fuel adulteration, food adulteration, lpg delivery, spurious drugs, non-uniformity of rates being charged by cable operators etc.
