Display of pro-Pak sentiments in Kashmir not new phenomenon | | | Display of pro-Pakistan and anti- India sentiments by a small section of people in the Kashmir valley is not a new phenomenon. It is as old as the partition of India. There has been increase in the display of such sentiments since the India-Pakistan armed conflict in 1965.In fact the scales were turned against India from 1953 onwards when the duly elected Prime Minister,Sheikh Abdullah, led Government was dismissed and the Sheikh was arrested and tried for sedition.Though Sheikh Abdullah never had any love for Pakistan or he never wanted the state of Jammu and Kashmir to be part of Pakistan he simply wanted an independent state of Jammu and Kashmir without any political and administrative control either by New Delhi or by Islamabad. However, those who supported his Plebiscite Front and those who had been opposed to his plan of joining hands with India in 1947 gave a new twist to Sheikh Abdullah's idea of an independent Jammu and Kashmir.Even during the time Sheikh Abdullah was in prison or a free man pro-Pakistan slogans were heard in some parts of the Kashmir valley. The scene took a new turn when Sheikh Abdullah regained power under the Accord he had framed with Indira Gandhi in 1975.Though the level of anti-India activities experienced a marked drop in the state, there were many who supported Kashmir's incorporation with Pakistan. And among those who followed this idea were even members of the state Assembly. However, with the rise of Pakistan sponsored insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir the level of display of anti-India and pro-Pakistan sentiments has undergone marked increased since 1990.With the birth of gun culture in the valley a number of nationalist forces within some mainstream political parties were forced to act as either couriers of terrorists or their supporters by providing them food and shelter.Yes,there has been some sort of uproar against a number of incidents of waving of Pakistani flags and that of the ISIS flags during some rallies organised by the Kashmiri separatists.Such incidents had virtually forced the coalition Government to arrest a dreaded separatist, Masarat Alam, who had been released af ter a two-year detention because his supporters had waved Pakistani flags during a rally held in Srinagar by Alam to greet Syed Ali Shah Geelani's arrival from New Delhi after a gap of three months. After this Pakistan flag waving there were number of waving of Pak flags alongwith ISIS flags. A demand has surfaced favouring enactment of a separate law for penalising those who waved Pakistani or ISIS flags. The RSS ideologue Indresh Kumar has called for enacting a law to punish individuals indulging in pro-Pakistan public posturing, including hoisting of green crescent flags. He has said it was against the basic tenets of Islam to show solidarity with another country instead of one's motherland.Hoisting Pakistani flags or raising slogans in its favour is totally unacceptable to the Indian society. Be it Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat or any other part of the country, Indian constitution should not tolerate Pakistan sympathisers. There is an urgent need to enact a law to award punishment to such elements. This is the sermon from Indresh Kumar. But he and those having views similar to Kumar need to know that there are laws which, when enforced, can award punishment to those waving Pak or ISIS flags in Jammu and Kashmir which is an integral part of India. Hence there is no need for enacting new laws. What is needed is the enforcement of the laws that could prevent a section of people from displaying pro-Pakistan sentiments. Since such a display is not a new phenomenon the state and the central Governments need to tackle the problem carefully lest any wrong step should create added problems for the people nd the Government in Jammu and Kashmir. |
