Telecom operators suspend operations in Baramulla | Attack on mobile towers | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, July 20: Following fresh militant threats, various telecom operators and recharge outlet have decided to close down their businesses here in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. According to sources that, various cellular operators of north Kashmir's Baramulla district today held a meeting in which they decided to shutdown all the telecom showrooms, recharge outlets for time being and hold the fresh activation of new connections in abeyance. "Following the recent attack on mobile tower in Nehalpora Pattan, telecom operators are being harassed and threatened of dire consequences, after which telecom operators held a meeting in which it was decided to close the business on temporary basis, said sources. Sources wished anonymity said that following fresh threats from the militant outfit Lashkar-e Islam in Baramulla district, telecom operators have decided to close all the showrooms, in the district. Sources said that, recently militants hurled two hand grenades on mobile towers in Pattan area, on June 15, which has threatened them and they don't want to continue their businesses for some time. Sources quoting the Area Manager of cellular company said that, they are asked to shutdown the services at the earliest otherwise they will face the music. However it is also learnt that the employees associated with the telecommunication business and franchisees are not ready to work under such circumstances, where there is a threat to life, said sources. Telecom operators across the north Kashmir feels unsafe due to lack of security and according to them telecom operators are ready to shut down their business rather than being harassed or threatened of dire consequences in future, sources informed. Pertinently two people who were associated with the telecommunication businesses franchisees of the BSNL and proprietor of mobile tower were gunned down in Sopore town in the past month. The fresh threat will be a new challenge for the government. Somehow in the past they restored the telecomm operations but have failed to provide the security to telecom operators who had become the soft target of militant outfit in the Kashmir valley. Early Times spoke to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police north Kashmir range Garib Dass, who said that, so for there is no direct threat from any quarter, but fact of the matter is that following the recent attack on mobile tower in Nehalpora Pattan, today some mobile operators in downtown Sopore held a meeting in which they had decided to close down their businesses. When asked about the security measures for these telecom operators, He said that we had planned to do that, but God forbidden if such things happened again then definitely we will look into the matter.
