Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, July 31: A 105-year-old government hospital building was gutted in a major fire here today afternoon. Loss is estimated at crores of rupees. The blaze started around 3.30 pm in the hospital and quickly engulfed the whole building and turned it into ashes, according to official sources. As the smoke started billowing out of the building, locals rushed to the spot and informed the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Baramulla. Eyewitness told Early Times that fire tenders reached the spot at least one hour late. Had the department acted swiftly, the building could have been saved, they felt. Sources said the hospital was established in 1910 but due to the rush of patients, it was shifted to the new building at Kantbagh. However, after its shifting, the Centre had approved Mother and Child Care Hospital (MCH) and sanctioned Rs 2 cr to complete its renovation work within six months. Even though the state government had also assured that the classes for MBBS students will be started very soon but it would not be possible now. Meanwhile, locals said that the hospital building had become a safe haven for gamblers, anti-social elements and drunkards. They said since the building was not in use, they were surprised how it caught fire. They did not rule the possibility of some conspiracy behind it. They also ruled out the possibility of an electric short-circuit. They warned to go on strike in case the matter was not got investigated thoroughly. Earlier on January 24, 2014, Government Higher Secondary for Boys was gutted in a fire in which major portion of the building caught fire. So for no investigation was carried out into the incident. |
