Babu Raj Zindabad! Legislators cry foul as officers take them for a ride | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report srinagar, July 31: Contrary to government claims of strengthening democratic institutions of J&K, the official machinery is allegedly acting as a spoilsport as the pleas of elected legislators for people's welfare are thrown to the dustbin. Sources told Early Times that many legislators are up in arms against the bureaucracy for undermining their pleas to address the grievances of common people in their respective constituencies. "Every day babus are undermining the post and position of the elected representatives of the state," source said. They said that in Power Development Department, R&B, PHE Divisions and other offices of the public dealings, the directions and pleas of the MLAs are ignored by the helmsmen posted in the offices while anarchical measures are ruling the roost in the state. "People voted for us as we promised them good governance, drains and lanes, electricity and water supplies, but the government departments ignore the elected representatives like they ignore a common man," one of the MLAs, wishing not to be named, told Early Times. He said the government departments wherein the woes of the common masses could get addressed are not ready to uphold directions of the legislators. "In J&K it is the officer raj going on. Unfortunately, there are a couple of former bureaucrats who have been elevated to the posts of ministers here. They uphold what we term officer shahi among already perturbed masses of J&K," the aggrieved legislator said. "The fact is that bureaucrats take us for a ride, and every day the position is getting difficult for us," said another legislator. Also, there are reports coming in that even the legislators from the ruling PDP accuse the state bureaucracy of 'high handedness' in Kashmir valley. Take for example MLA Zadibal Molvi Aabid Ansari. He has been asking the PDD to restore the power supply in Lal Bazaar, which falls under his constituency. But the AEE concerned has been undermining Abid's pleas since he assumed office. "I wonder, why such a bizarre process is in vogue here. The entire area is metered for past five years. I have sought votes from people, promising them that I will address the genuine issue of power paucity in the area. The entire area is metered for five years but the AEE is adamant not to restore electricity as per schedule to people," said Ansari. Ansari reportedly later approached the higher authorities to get the issue resolved but no heed was paid to his requests. Interestingly, the MLAs and MLCs are caught between the devil and the deep sea, knowing little how to tackle the aggrieved masses who were promised during polls that their woes pertaining to sadak, bijli and pani will get addressed. Also, on ground a belief is getting strengthened among the masses here that polls resolve no issue and promises made by the political parties are made only to be broken later. "Who would believe that we ourselves are caught in the mess of official apathy," a legislator from ruling coalition said. |
