Qayoom Najar's aide found dead | | | S Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report BANDIPORA, Aug 3: Police on Monday recovered the body of a militant, Tariq Ahmad Mir alias Zahid Arif of Audoora Mawar Handwara. believed to be an aide of Qayoom Najar, self styled commander of breakaway Hizbul group, lashkar-e-Islam, which hogged the headlines after carrying out multiple attacks on mobile towers and killed a few civilians in north Kashmir's Sopore area. The deceased, officials said, was involved in an attack on Police party in Mirgund area last week. A police official told Early Times that "A body was recovered from River Jhelum in Sumbal area of Bandipora district on this morning. A pistol was also recovered from the deceased. The identity of the deceased was not ascertained immediately so in this regard relatives of several active militants were called in for identification." The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police north Kashmir Range, Garib Dass told Early Times that yesterday evening two suspected militants were seen in Sumbal area after which police chased them. In the meanwhile both the suspected militants had jumped in the nullah, out of which one died due to drowning and another one crossed the nullah. Today morning the body of a militant was recovered along with a 9 mm Shaheen pistol (Made in Pakistan) 1 magazine and 10 rounds from a flood channel at Gulabwari in Naidkhai village of Bandipora district. The DIG said that police are investigating all the angles about the cause of his death. However, initial investigations revealed that the deceased had died due to drowning. Dass said the deceased is one among the two militants who attacked police party at Mirgund Pattan which resulted in injury to three cops and a driver on July 31. The deceased militant was co accused in Mirgund firing. Qayoom Najar and Tariq Mir were the main accused, after injuring three police personnel they had fled from the spot. He said that, " Mir was Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in north Kashmir and he was also associated with Lashkar-i-Islam militant outfit as Deputy Commander. He was active in the area for 15 years. Two times he had gone to Pakistan for arms training since 2000. He was involved in the killing of 4 policemen in Putkhah Sopore, two policemen of IRP in Handwara and in other cases too, the DIG added. |
