SKIMS confirms molestation bid on patient by technician | Blames police for failing to control mob | | Abdul Majid ET Report Srinagar, Aug 3: An operation theatre technician at SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Bemina, Srinagar, attempted to molest a patient. But a handout from the office of Director SKIMS Dr Showkat Zargar sought to blame the police for arriving late at the scene to control an angry mob. Strangely, the handout first mentioned the rampage by the mob than the molestation bid. "Attendants of patient namely from Mansoor Colony, Bemina, Srinagar, who had alleged OT technician of inappropriately touching her barged into operation theatre damaged public property and created panic in the hospital subsequent to the incident on August 1," the handout said. It hinted that action was underway against the accused only because of his personal intervention. "SKIMS Superintendent informed that immediate action was taken against the said employee after the alleged incident who has been put under suspension and inquiry has been initiated by Principal/Director & ex-officio Secretary to Government. The employee has also surrendered before police," the handout said. Giving details the SKIMS officials said the patient who was admitted under MRD No. 308234 and IPD No. 008647 in the department of ENT was operated for tonsillectomy under general anesthesia by the consultant of ENT and was under the supervision of theatre staff up to 3:45 pm. "The patient came out from recovery room and complained against the theatre employee (OT technician) that he had touched her in the recovery room inappropriately. However, despite action by administration and assurance of fair investigation the attendants/ agitated mob doesn't allow work to continue and continuously harass doctors and paramedics and other staff at the hospital," the Director said. He then sought to blame the police. "The SKIMS Medical College authorities also brought the matter into the notice of SSP Srinagar & IGP Kashmir. However, delayed action by concerned Divisional Officer, Police Post, Bemina (that) was immediately informed about the situation for taking appropriate action against mob which damaged equipment in operation theatre including USG machines, monitors and equipment in orthopedic ward and creating unnecessary fear among hospital," the handout said. "The MS SKIMS said the inaction by the concerned divisional officer further deteriorated the situation and uncontrolled mob went berserk in the hospital harassed hospital staff and disrupted hospital functioning. As a result the employees went on strike against harassment and demand security," the handout said. However, a police official said it was lame accuse on the part of hospital administration. "Instead of having kept an eye on their staff they blame police. We rushed to the hospital the moment they called us. How can they blame us," said the police official. |
