Execution work on Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel affected due to 'workers stir' | | | Early Times Report Banihal, Aug 25: The execution work on Eight kilometer long Banihal Qazigund four lane tunnel of National Highway remained suspended for the last one week from Banihal end while it also observed closure for over 25 days from Kashmir side (North end) by the workers of the company on the their different demands. The Navayuga construction company which is undertaking this 08 kms long tunnel is alleged to discriminate local workers against the outsiders. Reports said to register their protest against alleged discriminative approach of company, the workers of engaged by this company on the Kashmir side have gone to indefinite strike from last four weeks on their different demands while the workers working in southern artery of the tunnel i.e. from Banihal end have joined the indefinite stir from last week. Protestors alleged that the workers are demanding the company to give them the wages at par with others from hired from other state i.e. to uniform wages to locals and non locals workers as well. Protesting workers alleged that company is paying more perks to workers engaged from other states than the locals which is sheer discrimination with locals. They also demanded the clearance of previous non-released payment of overtime when company stopped the work on tunnel due to some financial reasons in 2013. Workers also demanded that company should have to sign agreement with them before the competition of project for their final retrenchment compensation. They also alleged that some allowances are not paid to worker as per labour laws. An officer of the company on anonymity told that the company is paying all the wages as per company rule and labour laws. He said that the strike of the workers is unjustified and quoting Regional Labour Commissioner stated that there is no rule of paying overtime to the workers during any kind of halt of project work. He more clarified them that over time wages are paying on the bases of both sides of willingness for work employer and employee. He maintained that company has paid the workers wages and other benefits under labour laws are already maintained by the company and workers are paid accordingly. Meanwhile over 750 workers of the company sat on a dharna on north portal of the tunnel to register their resentment and also alleged that company is not paying them other allowances as per rules of labour law. It is pertinent to mention here that this Prestigious project of four way has already late due to different Problems in past also. Sources more said that the negotiation between the company management officers and workers are going on when the last report came in. Construction of this 8.45 km (5.25 mi) long Banihal-Qazigund road tunnel started in 2011 to widen NH 1A to four lanes. The new tunnel's average elevation at 1,790 m (5,870 ft) is 400 metre lower than the existing Jawahar tunnel's elevation and would reduce the road distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 km (9.9 mi). The new tunnel would also be less prone to snow avalanche as it will be at a lower elevation. The vehicles will have to pay toll tax to use the tunnel. |
