Rahul's sudden love for Pak-shelling hit people more of a political stunt | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 25: While the border dwellers in Jammu lost their lives in Pak shelling during the erstwhile UPA regime also, AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi never visited them but his sudden love now for the affected areas and families seems merely a political stunt aimed at grabbing media and public attention. His scheduled 3-day visit to the state begins tomorrow. Soon after his arrival here, he would go to Balakote in Poonch district, where six people were killed and scores wounded due to the Pak firing on August 15. While his sudden concern for the Pak-firing hit people is unlikely to achieve the desired result, he would surely gain attention of the affected population and media. He was scheduled to meet the affected population at Balakote and representatives of different sections of society, apart from addressing a panchayat conference but his visit is being criticised for varied reasons. During the long spell of Congress rule in the country, there were several incidents of ceasefire violations on the Jammu borders and the killings of innocent people, besides an incident of beheading of two army jawans on LoC in Poonch but neither Rahul Gandhi nor any of the Congress ministers then visited the affected population but now when the UPA is out of power, he has all of a sudden attached importance to the border firing issue and the affected people. This is merely a political stunt, feel the political observers. They said it was ironic that those who did nothing to teach Pakistan a lesson when the enemy troops had beheaded two army jawans were now shedding crocodile tears over the lives lost in the unprovoked enemy shelling. It is largely felt that the sole purpose of Rahul's entire "gimmick" during his scheduled tour to the state is to score brownie points before media rather than solving any issue of the border residents. After being badly rejected by the voters, he has suddenly started showing concern for the border residents but where was he when, during the UPA rule at the Centre, Pak was targeting civilian areas in Jammu border region, killing people and destroying their properties? Rahul must understand that people of the country had taught a lesson to his Congress party by rejecting it outrightly in the last General Elections. Even in J&K, its candidates had lost badly to BJP candidates in Jammu region. So, instead of doing the things to gain attention, he should sincerely take in hand the real issues facing the people to re-strengthen his party. The superficial handling and treatment of the issues would take his party nowhere. Apart from Balakote, during his 3-day visit, he was expected to visit Sopore and Pampore areas of Kashmir. Sopore, the hometown of pro-Pak Hurriyat activist Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was in the news recently after suspected militants killed some people associated with the telecom business. The attacks had forced many to close down their operations. He was also scheduled to interact with people in the valley before travelling to Kargil and Leh areas in Ladakh district. During interaction with public in the three regions of the state, he was expected to criticise the Modi-led NDA government at the Centre, especially in view of the collapse of NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan over the Islamabad's insistence on meeting Hurriyat leaders prior to a bilateral engagement. Given the situation on borders and in Kashmir, where the separatists unfortunately have their nuisance value, he was expected to carefully handle his words or he himself would become the subject of criticism in the country. |
