Forget Pak flag waving at Mirwaiz rallies, Govt to enhance his security | BJP's left red faced again | | ET Report srinagar, Aug 25: While his Friday rallies at Jamia Masjid have witnessed waving of ISIS and Pakistani flags this year, the State Government instead of taking any action is all set to enhance the security of Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Highly placed sources said the PDP-BJP Government has decided that 'Z' category security status of Mirwaiz would be enhanced to 'Z-plus' level "in the wake of increasing threat perception on his life." Sources said a group of Ministers from the PDP, who allegedly enjoy good relations with Mirwaiz, have convinced their counterparts from the BJP to enhance his security. "The PDP ministers want to maintain harmonious relations with the Mirwaiz camp, while some BJP leaders are understood to have approved the idea," sources said. They said the Government wants to do it by playing the card of "intelligence inputs about threat to his life" while Mirwaiz has already been informed about the development. Sources said the BJP was informed that there was threat to Mirwaiz since May when the Hurriyat-M annually holds anti-national rallies in connection with death anniversary of his father Molvi Mohammad Farooq who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the '90s. "Rivalry among the separatist parties could be a cause of this threat because it was only in May this year that some of the constituents of the Hurriyat (M) jumped off into Geelani's Hurriyat, making the latter stronger," the sources said. Apart from Mirwaiz, other leaders of Hurriyat (M) who enjoy security provided by the Government of India include Abdul Gani Bhat, Abbas Ansari, Bilal Lone, Fazal Haq Qureshi and Shahid-ul-Islam. But Mirwaiz is the only separatist who would be having the highest level of security in the Valley apart from mainstream politicians including Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his predecessor Omar Abdullah. Mirwaiz would receive additional security at a time when ISIS and Pakistani flags are waved frequently at his weekly rallies in the downtown here. This too has been happening since May, while of late posters of ISIS chief Abu Bakr Al Baghdai were spotted in Nowhatta, prompting the police to file FIR. But while Mirwaiz hasn't reacted to the waving of these flags, his arch rival Syed Ali Geelani has been vocal against the developments. On June 12, after Mirwaiz delivered his weekly Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid, some masked youth waved ISIS flags. This hogged the headlines. A day after the incident, on June 13, Geelani reacted sharply. Expressing displeasure over the hoisting of ISIS flags, he said that "such instances provide a handle to defame the ongoing struggle in Kashmir." "Waving of ISIS flags during peaceful demonstrations is against discipline and also negates our strategy. Such things provide a handle to India to defame our legitimate freedom struggle," Geelani had said in a statement. But Mirwaiz has not uttered a word over the developments. In fact he has been avoiding questions about the issue. Amid this all, Mirwaiz is getting more security. The 'Z-plus' security is given by the National Security Guard commandos. They are armed with sophisticated MP5 guns and modern communication gadgets, and each member of the team is adept in martial arts and unarmed combat skills. |
