Separatists interested more in their survival than peace | | | What is intriguing is the way separatists, especially those who belong to the camp of hardliners, have voiced no regrets over the collapse of the proposed NSA level talks between India and Pakistan. Mainstream political leaders, including Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, have expressed disappointment over the collapse of the proposed talks on the plea that had the NSA level talks been held the two sides could have initiated steps for ensuring peace on the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir. Syed Ali Shah Geelani's faction expressed satisfaction over their victory on diplomatic front. India's fanatic approach has helped them take their voice to the international community which is a matter of happiness and satisfaction for the Kashmiri separatists. If Pakistan remains consistent in its policy, India will have to talk on Kashmir is the latest sermon from the camp of hardliners among the separatists.Asiya Andrabi, who leads the radical only-women group Dukhtaran-e-Millat, said Pakistan had "exhibited daring policy". Pakistan's invitation to separatists, including Geelani and Andrabi, to a reception hosted for its NSA Sartaj Aziz in New Delhi became the stumbling block for talks as India expressed strong objection. The reaction of joy over the collapse of talks indicates that the separatists are not as much bothered over the scope for promoting cordial ties between India and Pakistan as they are worried over their relevance and presence in the political waters of Kashmir. What seems to have added to the sense of satisfaction among the separatists is their success in having registered their relevance when Pakistan called off the proposed NSA level talks because India had made it clear that it would not allow Sartaj Aziz to have a meeting with the Kashmiri separatists in New Delhi a day before the start of the his talks with India's NSA,Ajit Doval. These separatists have started harbouring fresh ambitions without realising that the real reason for Pakistan to call of talks was somewhat different. Pakistan felt its side would be embarrassed by the dossier prepared by India on Pakistan's involvement in exporting terror to India, especially to Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian side had prepared complete details on Pakistan's involvement in Gurdaspur attack and the other in Udhampur. And India's External Affairs Minister,Sushma Swaraj, has rightly stated that while Pakistan was submitting a file on India's alleged role in Baluchistan trouble India was handing over substantial proof on Islamabad's involvement in exporting terror to India and in this context Naved, arrested on charge of having masterminded the attack on a bus carrying BSF personnel in which two soldiers were killed, was to be presented to Sartaj Aziz. The second factor was Pakistan's worry over India's success in Ufa for having made Nawaz Sharif agree on NSA level talks for discussing terror. In the face of these two factors Kashmiri separatists seem to live in a world of their dreams. They believe that Pakistan called off the NSA level talks because India did not accept Islamabad's plea for a meeting between Sartaj Aziz and separatists in New Delhi. Suppose Islamabad had been the venue for the proposed NSA level talks Pakistan would have made no such plea for having a date with Kashmiri separatists. Hence Omar Abdullah is right when he advocated the need for shifting the NSA level talks venue to Islamabad. The expression of satisfaction from the camp of hardliners among the separatists also indicates that they are not keen to restore and promote peace in Jammu and Kashmir and the entire south Asian region but are keen to avoid their shops getting shut.Yes,their shops will have to be shut if India and Pakistan promote cordial ties and resolve various outstanding issues. Since the rise of Pakistan sponsored militancy in Jammu and Kashmir separatists camps have suddenly flourished in Kashmir allowing them a chance to play politics over the bodies of several thousand people. And had these separatists been in favour of promoting peace in Kashmir they would have volunteered to stay back in Srinagar to allow the NSA level talks to be held in New Delhi. They did not do it which indicates that they are more interested in their survival than in establishing peace in Kashmir. |
