ICCR organizes Karkan festival at Marh | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 25: Indian Council for Cultural Relation, Ministry of External Affair on Tuesday organized 'Karkan Festival' at historic 'Raja Mandleek Sathaan' of Village Marh, wherein six prominent traditional groups were performed. According to press release, this was the first ever festival of traditional singing where six different groups performed in a chorus style by singing together with the accompaniment of six Sarangis, six Dhols and tweleve lead singers. "This assimilation was amazing as people witnessed this large group singing together for the first time and their forceful singing backed with heavy rhythms was echoing the entire border villages of Jammu". Earlier introducing this new concept of showcasing tradition, the Regional Director of ICCR Jammu Balwant Thakur said that the idea is to magnify the magic of a traditional performance by devising new ways of presentation. "There had never been a tradition that a traditional performance is devised designed and rehearsed, to enhance the affectivity of its presentation and this is for the first time this great tradition of Dogri singing is being showcased in this manner", he said. He further said that such artistic intervention was required to infuse vibrancy aimed at making it moving beyond times. "If such kind of mega traditional events are organised on regular basis can certainly make village Marh a cultural destination of tourists". Describing the magnificent tradition 'Karkan', Balwant Thakur informed that this narrative singing tradition is over one thousand years old and there has been an era when the practitioners of this great narrative tradition used to be custodians of the entire political history, cultural repository and wisdom of the times. |
