BJP leaders shielding accused cops; Justice Sharma report being ignored | Agreement over Amarnath agitation in trash | | ET Report jammu, Aug 31: Following pressure from the various organisations BJP leadership including some Ministers had participated in the function which was organised to pay tributes to martyrs of 2008 Amarnath land agitation but the BJP after attaining power in the State has done nothing to provide justice to the martyrs' families. What to say of providing justice to the families who lost their dear ones in the 60 days long agitation, BJP leadership even rubbed salts on their wounds by shielding and promoting those officers who were responsible for committing atrocities on agitators and other supporters of the agitation. BJP is in power at the Centre from May 2014 and in Jammu and Kashmir party is also sharing power with PDP since March 1, 2015 but for the helpless families of martyrs nothing has been done. Instead of pursuing cases of the martyrs and others who were falsely booked during agitation, BJP leadership and ministers are shamelessly hobnobbing with those officers who were responsible for meting out inhuman treatments of the people of Jammu region at that time. Credible sources said that Justice (Retd) G D Sharma, who headed one man Inquiry Commission to inquire about atrocities on Jammu people during that agitation, had prepared its interim report but no one in BJP is ready to accept this report to take further action. The one man Inquiry Commission has recommended action against some police officers but the BJP leadership appears to be not in a mood to implement this report because their main concerned this time is to enjoy the power instead of touching any emotional issues. In the agreement which was signed on August 31, 2008, it was agreed to withdraw criminal cases against various persons during the period of agitation, provision of compensation to the families of the deceased and to the injured and working out of appropriate packages of financial assistance to compensate losses of the transport sector, trade and industry, horticulture sector, hoteliers and tourist operators. The State Government had agreed to examine all these demands in an appropriate manner on time-bound basis. In particular, as regards the registration of criminal cases against various persons during the period of agitation, it is agreed that all cases of non-serious nature which shall mean bailable and compoundable will be withdrawn. The remaining cases will be reviewed, on the merits of each case, by a Committee headed by Anil Goswami, the then Principal Secretary (Home) within 60 days. Till the completion of this process, no action will be taken in such cases. Also, specific allegations of atrocities on agitators, based on prima-facie evidence, could also be looked into by this Committee. It was also agreed in the agreement that ex-gratia relief will be extended in favour of the next of the kin of the deceased and in favour of permanently disabled and the injured in all cases covered under the existing rules of the State Government. |
