SC order on meat ban relieves JK Govt | Apex court stresses need for spirit of tolerance | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 17: The Supreme Court order of refusing to grant stay on the Bombay high court order lifting ban on sale of meat during Jain festival has come as a breather to the state government which is fixed in a tight spot after the State High Court banned the sale of the beef in the State. The SC order though said if the compassion is to be shown to the animals than it should be shown throughout the year and not for specific period. But what could be music to ears of the coalition government is that SC said that spirit of tolerance should be there in society which is missing now. The State government especially the PDP which is finding itself fixed in tight spot after the HC order could take this as a cue in its reply before the HC which is stated to be filed in next three week The Law Departments sources said that the state government response would be on these lines, "The cue has been given by the apex court. Our reply would also petition before the court that since a majority community in the State has a religious practice of sacrificing animals and also eat meat it should be also taken into the consideration," said the sources. The law department is holding consultations with the senior lawyers in preparing a reply. The Mufti government also sees an opportunity in this order of the SC to settle the things in a much more sobre way and also avoid confrontation with its allied partner and also in the process rejecting the communally slanted proposed amendments in the Ranbir Penal Code by the National Conference. "The NC will be biggest loser in this end game as SC order will gives a more forceful plea in making before the state high court and getting the things settled in a manner which will not be objected by the either partner," said the senior PDP leader. |
