Absolute power corrupts absolutely | | Tahir Ali Shah | 9/18/2015 12:08:39 AM |
| The proverbial dictum, 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely' has come to stay in our political system also. ... Corruption has indeed become a way of life. ...It is directly proportionate to the greed for power. Corruption also means immorality, dishonesty and decay. ... Now it is unlikely that all the people keep to that simple principle - to be honest. Corruption has become a way of life or so we may say it always has been so since times immemorial. Most of the people stand before the choice - poverty or riches, honesty or corruption. And the choice is hard, difficult. I think that the first step into slippery ground is not doing something bad or illegal, but even thinking about it. This is where all the temptations begin. When a person starts to doubt what is good and what is wrong, he starts to think that it is possible to find a way how to avoid pricks of conscience, and then he indulges in doing the wrong without any fear of retribution. A country always suffers at the hands of 'Absolutism'. Absolutism is a system of government in which the ruler has total control. The government of King Louis XIV of France is an example of absolutism. While King Louis thought he was being a good ruler to his people he brought suffering to them by using the power of absolutism. For Hitler, Napoleon, Mussolini, Saddam and Macbeth, absolute power has had no positive outcomes in their lives but bring forth guilt, unhappiness and loneliness. Evil forces have caused them to commit horrific crimes that might not have even been considered if they were not driven by a wicked motive: power. Their rise to the top only led to their drop to the bottom. They all did everything necessary to obtain their goal and in doing so, they isolated themselves from the world. Often it is seen that political corruption leads to economic corruption and hence has a negative impact on the development and growth of a nation. Corruption is a threat to democracy. Human history has so far witnessed three modes or forms of governance: (a) governance by a monarch / king, (b) rule by a dictator and (c) democratic governance. Through a process of trial and error, democracy with all its flaws has come to be accepted as the best form of governance. India with its great heritage of moral values, culture and civilization is undoubtedly the largest democratic country in the world. By being a democratic country India has tried warding off the ill-effects of corruption but so far has not succeeded in doing so as it can never get fully eradicated unless each and every citizen realizes his/her responsibility in combating it. Only then can our country could be free from the age old clutches of this demon prevalent in our society. To root out the evil of corruption from society, we need to make a comprehensive code of conduct for politicians, legislatures, bureaucrats, and such code should be strictly enforced. Judiciary should be given more independence for taking initiatives on issues related to corruption. Special courts should be set up to take up such issues and speedy trial is to be promoted. Law and order machinery should be allowed to work without political interference. NGOs and media should come forward to create awareness against corruption in society and educate people to combat this evil. Only then we would be able to save our system from being collapsed. |
