SIM card sale against fake documents on rise in Udhampur 10/5/2015 12:16:33 AM Sarita Jamwal Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, Oct 4: The practice of selling mobile phone SIM cards against fake 'identification documents' is alleged to be thriving in Udhampur district. According to the information gathered from different sources, a number of locals, migrant labourers and others had obtained SIM cards by allegedly submitting fake 'identification documents'. Some of the SIM card providers were doing this unlawful business only to make more money which they get as commission, sources alleged, saying they "distribute their SIM cards through agencies and promoters". When a SIM card is activated the promoter and the agency get a commission of Rs 100 to Rs 200, sources informed. Vikram Singh, a local, said that as per the modus operandi, more than one SIM card was allegedly being registered by using the same photo and different identification documents. "The fake SIM connections are also activated by making copies of the identification documents submitted by other users, or by getting copies of the documents furnished by people for various other services," he alleged. The mobile phone service providers claim that they withhold applications submitted along with dubious identification documents or verify the applications. Although the licenses of agencies that submit the same documents more than once to activate SIM are being cancelled by the service providers, they change the name of the agencies and continue with their business. The main consumers of SIM cards secured through fake identification documents are migrant workers and those who use mobile phones for criminal activities. The agencies make double the profit when they allegedly sell fake SIM connections. Since service providers are offering additional rewards when porting of mobile phone numbers, some agencies allegedly port the connections taken with the help of fake identification documents.
