Domestic violence cases on rise across Kashmir valley | 40 per cent women abused by husband or in-laws | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 4: At a time when domestic violence is increasing at an alarming rate in Kashmir with more than 40 percent of women being physically or mentally abused by husbands or by in-laws, the state government is contemplating necessary corrective measures. The sociologists believe that in most of the cases of domestic violence, the reasons are unemployment, dowry, interference from in-laws, misunderstanding, misconception and giving birth to female babies. "Domestic violence is most commonly experienced by women and perpetrated by men. Any womon can experience domestic violence regardless of religion, race, class, group and lifestyle," he said while sharing his views with Early Times. Jammu division has witnessed more such cases. In 2014 over 1,000 complaints were received and in majority of cases with the intervention of police and through the process of guidance and counselling were made in the interest of both the parties. Sources in State Commission for Women said that every 10-15 complaints of domestic dispute are received in Kashmir only with many cases remaining unnoticed in other parts of the division. Sources said that more women should come forward to record their statements against domestic violence, under the Jammu and Kashmir, Protection of women from Domestic Violence Act, 2010. At the same time Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Asiya Naqash on Saturday said that the Burn Care Ward at SMHS Hospital would be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs. 4.45 crores. While inspecting the Burn Ward, the Minister was informed that 22 patients including 12 patients in Surgical Ward are under treatment. She said that stern action will be taken against culprits of domestic violence. She inspected various wards at the Hospital including Burn Ward, Emergency Surgical and Disaster Multi Causality Ward and took stock of the facilities and other treatment being provided to the patients there. The Minister directed the hospital administration to ensure every possible help to the patients. She also stressed on maintaining cleanliness in and around the hospital. Asiya said that domestic violence is heart wrenching and government is serious in this regard. She said that one Staff Crises Centre will be established in Srinagar soon with the helpline number 181. She said that the Centre would help women folk in distress by protection care assistance, health facilities and legal assistance. The Minister said that people involved in domestic violence would not be spared and government will take strong action against offenders and punishment according to law will be given to them. |
