BJP legislators to remain silent during autumn session | Status of Jammu AIIMS | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 4: Even as the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature has commenced, who will raise the issue to know the exact status of establishment of much-needed AIIMS in Jammu? This question may put the Government in a tight spot while the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is understood to have asked its lawmakers not to pose any query on the topic during the ongoing session. Though in August this year, following a massive agitation in the region, the central Government agreed to establish AIIMS in Jammu, till now, there has been no tangible breakthrough. Neither the allotment of the land has been finalized nor there came any final word on as to when the work would truly commence and how. While it should have been the responsibility of the BJP leadership to have ended the speculations and come up with a clear cut picture before the people of Jammu who voted them to power, the party has been buying time for the past two odd months on one pretext or the other. In the latest, Early Times reliably learnt the party leadership has passed a "confidential whip" to its lawmakers on not raising the issue of AIIMS in the assembly. "We can't comment on the exact status of the case so we asked our cadres to be silent or else we'll land in an embarrassing situation," said a BJP insider, pleading anonymity. But if the opposition National Conference, the Congress or anyone else picks up the issue, it is going to be tough time for the Government to make a convincing reply. This is because, as of now, the establishment of AIIMS continues to be more of lip-service for the people of Jammu, who over the years, have been ignored by successive regimes through mere promises which were never fulfilled. Though after agreement with the protesters in August, the Government went ahead with the process of identification of the land, the procedure was never completed. Sources said the Jammu district administration had identified three sites for establishment of AIIMS while the relevant papers were furnished to the Divisional Commissioner Jammu for subsequent submission before Union Health Ministry. Sources said the process to identify suitable sites for establishment of AIIMS was set into motion by the Deputy Commissioner Jammu onAugust 12 while report was to be submitted by August 31. "200 acres of land as desired by the Union Health Ministry were identified in Kot Bhalwal, Nagrota and Sunjwan-Raika areas," the sources said. Pertinently Union Joint Secretary in his communication dated August 4, 2015 had advised Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department of State Government to identify pieces of land measuring approximately 200 acres each in both Jammu and Srinagar. What happened next is for the Government to reply. But then who will bell the cat? |
