Maths lecturer teaches at home, ignores school | Director promises to look into the matter | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report
Srinagar Oct 4: A government school lecturer while leaving a blot on the face of Education system gives lectures to students at his residence rather than at the government Girls Higher Secondary School, Khrew in south Kashmir Pulwama district where he is posted. "Ab Hamid Wani, the maths lecturer doesn't follow the guidelines and prefers giving lectures of his own choice," a student of 12th class said. Wani teaches at the school from past six years. The students claim that the lecturer shows disinterest in teaching, however, takes classes at his own residence for which he takes tuition fees separately. "In the classes, the lecturer mostly tells us to go for self study. We find it difficult to do the maths on our own which has also caused weakness in our understanding of the subject," another student told Early Times. Director of School Education, Shah Faisal while talking to Early Times said that there is shortage of Mathematics teachers in the valley so they are not transferred as per the two year tenure at one place rule. "We will see if there is any discrepancy in his teaching methods and investigate the matter," Faisal said. However, Nayeem Akhtar, Minister for Education earlier admitted that political interference, postings and transfer of teachers have virtually destroyed the educational system in Jammu and Kashmir. Akhtar has also claimed that he wants to make government schools 'models' for private schools in the state in future which seems hollow promises of education department for the students in the Khrew Higher Secondary. "Teachers will be made stakeholders in performance of educational institutions. Their career advancement will be directly linked to the performance of students," Akhtar had claimed, while appealing to "highly-trained, dedicated and socially responsible citizens to associate with government schools in their locality". "We are worried that only two months remain before final examination but we haven't completed our syllabus yet. This is Mathematics subject which we can't learn as rest subjects are doing," a student shared. When contacted Chief Education Officer, Pulwama, Abdul Hamid Kumar, said that "I will look into the matter and if the lecturer found responsible for irregularities will take strict action against him." |
