Ahead of festive season, CAPD sugar goes missing | Daily wagers await wages | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 29: Ahead of the fast approaching festive season, the all important sugar is missing from the government ration godowns which has inconvenienced the people. The people have been left with no option but to purchase sugar from the open market at exorbitant rates. The scarcity of sugar has arisen due to the delay in completion of national level tendering process to procure 84,400 metric tonnes of sugar. The Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department invites tenders annually to cater to the needs of the consumers; however, the hold-up this time around has resulted in non-availability of sugar under Public Distribution System (PDS) to the ration card holders for the month of October. And, there are bleak chances that the fixed quota of sugar would be released to the consumers for the month of November also. Due to non-availability of sugar at the CAPD depots, verbal duals have become a common practice at the outlets. Non-release of salaries has also irked the people. As many as 61,000 daily wagers working in different government departments of the state are eagerly waiting for release of salary. Most of the daily wagers in Public Health and Engineering (PHE) department have not received their wages for the last three years. After they resorted to an agitation for two months at a stretch, the authorities suddenly woke up and released a month's salary. With prices of commodities having soared up, it is almost impossible for thousands of daily wagers to celebrate the upcoming festivals like Karva Chouth, Diwali and Bhai Dooj. |
