Army porter killed, son injured in avalanche | Rescue operation launched | | S.Tahir-ul Haq

BANDIPORA, Oct 29: A 45 year old Army porter was killed and his son injured on Thursday afternoon, after an avalanche struck the higher reaches of the Chakwali Tulial in Gurez sector of North Kashmir's Bandipora district. According to senior police official, an avalanche struck the hilly terrains of Bandipora district on Thursday afternoon resulting in the mishap. The incident occurred in B. Shankar post in the upper reaches of Cahkwali which has received 4-5 feet of snow on October 24, the official said. The official further said that the deceased army porter has been identified as Ghulam Qadir Khan 45, S/O Bullahh Khan R/O Kudarah Bandipora, and his son Farooq Ahmad 12, has sustained injuries. He said that the dead body of the deceased was not recovered yet, till the last reports came in. We are trying to our level best to recover his dead body at an earliest, so that the body can be handed over to his relatives for the last rites, and we fear that body may not have gone to the other side of LoC, said the official. However sources told early times that the avalanche hit between Razdan post and Z-Gushi in snow-bound Gurez sector on Thursday afternoon at around 1:50 pm. High altitude areas of Kashmir Valley, including Gurez, experienced first heavy snowfall early this week, said sources. Sources said that two to five feet of snow was recorded in the upper reaches of the Valley, as a result of which most of the far-flung areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Bandipora , Baramulla and Kupwara districts were cut off from the district headquarters. Pertinently higher reaches of Kashmir valley, including Gulmarag, Sadnatop, and Gurez experienced first heavy snowfall earlier this week, due to which many far flung villages in north Kashmir were cut off from rest of the district headquarters. |
