Musharraf admits Pakistan trained LeT activists | | | It has taken about eight years for former Pa- kistan President, Gen. Parvez Musharraf, to admit that Islamabad and its Army trained militants. Yes, he has admitted it after having lost power seven to eight years ago. When he was in power he would never admit that Pakistan had set up arms training camps for militants. At the most he, like any other politician, would say that Pakistan provided moral', political, and diplomatic support to "freedom fighters."What is strange about Musharraf's acceptance of Pakistan's main hand in providing arms training to militants was his claim that these militants were trained for fighting against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan. In his interview Musharraf has talked about the role of militants in Jammu and Kashmir because he has coined a new term for their activities saying that during his time it was religious militancy. He believes that religious militancy was a fit term for describing the activities of militants because they were fighting forces of repression in Jammu and Kashmir and in Afghanistan. And when these very militants have trained their guns against security forces, civilians and political leaders in Pakistan Musharraf describes it as conversion of religious militancy into terrorism. Pervez Musharraf has admitted that Pakistan supported and trained groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in 1990s to carry out militancy in Kashmir. "In the 1990s, the freedom struggle began in Kashmir. At that time Lashkar-e-Taiba and 11 or 12 other organisations were formed. Pakistan supported them and trained them as they were fighting in Kashmir at the cost of their lives What could peeve New Delhi is the way Musharraf has claimed that extremists like Hafiz Saeed and Lakhvi had enjoyed the status of heroes at that time. Does this mean that Saeed and Lakhvi had gained the status of heroes when Musharraf was in power and now these two extremists have too become terrorists The Kashmiri freedom fighters including Hafiz Saeed and Lakhvi were heroes at that time. Later on, the religious militancy turned into terrorism. Now they (referring to militants in Pakistan) are killing their own people and this should be controlled and stopped. Another interesting part of the interview is that Musharraf had no comments when the interviewer asked him whether Saeed and Lakhvi too should be controlled like other terrorists. He has said that religious militancy was started by Pakistan which brought militants from all over the world to fight against the Soviet forces. If Musharraf claims that Pakistan was in favour of religious militancy which side is supporting terrorism for which Pakistan has become a safe haven? Will Nawaz Sharif, who followed Musharraf as head of the Government accept what Musharraf has said about Islamabad's role in providing training to militants who were pushed into Jammu and Kashmir for fighting for freedom of people? In fact if Nawaz Sharif denies what Musharraf has claimed it will not have any impact on the policy of India because Pakistan's support to proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir is an old story. If Musharraf has described the activities of militants, who used to be part of former President's religious militancy, mere terror is Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistan Army ready to fight these terror groups? Possibilities seem to be remote. If religious militants were heroes in the eyes of Musharraf, terrorists too could be heroes in the eyes of Nawaz Sharif and Gen. Raheel Sharif, the Army Chief in Pakistan. Every militant is a hero so long he inflicts pain and death to civilians in India. Hope this policy undergoes a major change if Pakistan wants the bilateral dialogue process to get resumed and if Islamabad wants peace in the South Asian region. |
