'Tobacco free educational institutions campaign' launched | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 26: Admitting that many young minds are falling prey to smoking and tobacco use, Minister for School Education, Thursday asked teachers to act as role models and rally around students so that they do not feel attracted to the menace of smoking. Speaking at the launch ceremony of 'Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions Campaign' in Jammu and Kashmir, Akthar said that the fight against tobacco needs a much more concerted effort from all sections of the society and the government as well. "Lot needs to be done if we have to achieve tangible results. Young minds have to be made more conscious and various measures including setting up of de-addiction centres needs to be initiated so that the students are kept back from smoking and drug use," he said. The 'Tobacco Free Educational Institutions Campaign' initiated by Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) and J & K Voluntary Health Association was kick started at Ranbir Higher Secondary School, Jammu today. The campaign aims to ensure ban on sale of tobacco products to minors in all the educational institutions within 100 yards of their school premises. The campaign also intends at making all the educational Institutions in the state 'tobacco free' within the next four months. Pertinently, the Education Minister has already directed all officers in the education department to ensure 'Tobacco Free' educational Institutions in the state. Importantly, all Chief Education Officer's in the state have already issued orders asking all subordinate officers to submit monthly reports on action taken against COTPA violators in and around educational institutions in their respective districts. "All CEO's in the state should now ensure regular monitoring of section 6 of COTPA, work with the district police department to initiate action to book COTPA violations near educational institutions and submit a monthly report to the Director Education in both the regions indicating the action taken and follow up actions initiated every month," said Seema Gupta, Director, Voluntary Health Association of India. |
