Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 26: Pilferage of blood from blood banks of government hospitals to private nursing homes and hospitals has been going on unabated for the past many years but authorities have turned a blind eye towards this burning issue.
Sources in Government Medical College and Hospital informed Early Times that the facility of blood donation and storage was available only in three government hospitals including GMC&H, Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital Shalamar and Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar in Jammu region.
"There are nearly 100 private nursing homes, hospitals in Jammu in which doctors are also doing surgeries. On an average two surgeries are done in each nursing home and about half of the surgeries require blood for the patients", sources in GMC said.
They further added that as per an average, two to four blood bottles were required for a single surgery. "And these private nursing homes require at least 200 to 300 units of blood per day and a million dollar question is, from where the blood is coming to these nursing homes for surgeries", sources said.
An official of SMGS, pleading anonymity said, "Obviously the blood, being used in private nursing homes is being drained out from the government hospitals including GMC&H, SMGSH, and Gandhi Nagar hospital. "It is a very big nexus of officials of all the three hospitals and the Private Nursing homes, which helps to smooth passage of blood units from government hospitals to private nursing homes", he said.
He further said that to expose the scandal, the Health department administration must check record sheet of blood available in blood banks on regular basis so that the officials involved in the scandal could be booked. "All this is going on only due to strong lobby of doctors and officials of government hospitals along with huge money power", he said.
