DDC reviews status of solid waste management | | | Early Times Report
Poonch, Nov 26 : In order to address the growing challenge of Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSW), District Development Commissioner Poonch, Mohammad Harun Malik Thursday convened a meeting of concerned officers. Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Shafiq Ahmed Choudhary, SDM Surankote, Afzal Mirza, Chief Planning Officer, S R Bhagat, Superintendent Engineer Hydraulics, Rayasat Khan, Tehsildar Surankote, Mahmood Khan, Chief Executive Officer Poonch Municipal Council (PMC), Irshad Ahmed Sofi, Chief Agriculture Officer, Sadaqat Ali, XEn I&FC, Mushtaq Choudhary were among others who attended the meeting. Growing urbanization in Poonch and Surankote town has resulted in increase of solid waste. As the urban population is expected to increase Municipal Solid Waste Management has assumed great importance. In detailed deliberations, the ACR and CEO PMC informed the Deputy Commissioner that sate land measuring 14 Kanal and 4 marlas in Shehr Khas near Betar Bridge has been identified for Solid Waste Management Plant. The DDC directed the CEO to complete all the formalities including environmental assessment and NoC from the Pollution Control Board so that the plant is made operational at the earliest. Highlighting the importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Harun instructed the municipal authorities to create awareness among the city residents as the lack of civic awareness among them is proving to be additional hurdle in maintaining the cleanliness. He directed all the concerned authorities to proactively check the menace of polythene carry bags emphasizing that courts directions in this regard should be strictly implemented. Once operationalized, the Solid Waste Management Plant will cater to the Municipal Solid Waste Management needs of both Poonch Municipal Council and Surankote Municipal Committee. Because of the poor conditions for temporary storage of wastes and absence of solid waste management machinery, waste collection from households, streets etc. and its dumping in uncontrolled open landfills is leading to environmental pollution. |
