Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 20 : The severest part f winter begins tomorrow (December 21). It last up to last week of January and is commonly called Chalia Kalan. The water pipes, reservoirs, lakes and even drains freeze during this period. Anything that is wet including clothes freeze. Similarly anything that contains water also freezes. It is widely reported that a man drove a Jeep on the frozen Dal lake during Bakshi Ghulam Muhammad's regime. Some youth were seen running bikes on the frozen surface of the lake a few years ago forcing the government to impose a ban on such activities. Most of the people go out of the Valley to escape the chill. People with chest ailments especially move to warmer places. The Kangri manufacturers make a fortune during this period of winter. Every single Kangri costs around Rs 300. The Kangri's are mostly manufactured in Chrar-e-Sharief and at a few places in North and South Kashmir. However, while the people go away, millions of migratory birds With the MET office having predicted chilly winter ahead, the people have started dumping charcoal, saw dust, kerosene and dried vegetables. It is in place to mention here that the Srinagar-Jammu highway gets blocked very often in Chalia Kalan causing shortage of acute shortage of eatables and fuel. |
