Ungrateful city disgracing its martyred sons | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 20: A social organization has called upon the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development not to name the rotaries and roads of the city after the names of illustrious sons of the soil who laid an imprint on the history with their works, life and sacrifice. In an emotive appeal, it has been requested that names of the heroes assigned to city's rotaries and roads be scrapped so that they can be saved from disrespect and disgrace meted out to them everyday. " City's landmarks are named after the martyrs and those who made their country proud so that our future generations can remember them and derive inspiration from their deeds, but if they are disgraced and mortified by an ungrateful city, the only way to save them from this insult and embarrassment is to scrap their names from city's landmarks" said president of Sansakar Pratiraksha Samiti. Dutt, who had been doing his bit with the little resources he has to keep the memorials of the martyrs in shape, was particularly moved by the deplorable condition of the indicators placed on either side of 'Major Ajay Singh Jasrotia Marg' at Gandhi Nagar. Ajay was one of the first officers to be martyred during the Kargil war. He made supreme sacrifice for the honour of his motherland. And after he achieved martyrdom, the main road Gandhi Nagar was named after him as his family lived on the same stretch of the road. Two indicators were constructed on either end of the road, with the name of the martyr inscribed on them. However, rather than paying their homage to this great son of soil through them, they have become convenient places of sticking hand bills. "This pains me to see that handbills of all kinds are pasted on martyr's name, disgracing him and also his family which still lives on the same road" said the president. Major Ajay's name plate is not the only memorial which has been victim of city's unpardonable ungratefulness. Memorial of music legend K L Saigal at Link road and several others have been bearing neglect and apathy of the city they lived in and died for. |
