NET/SET qualifiers take jibe at PSC for stopping interviews of Assistant Professor Posts | Want UGC directive, SC order on PhD holders to be implemented in Toto | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 24: Candidates who have passed National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET) for lecturership are at loss these days since the Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (J&K PSC) has stopped the interview process for selection of Assistant Professors in different subjects in the state. A group of the candidates who have passed NET or SET have demanded that the interview process be restarted according to the latest directives of University Grants Commission. They said that the order issued by the Supreme Court on March 26, 2015 with regard to Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) should also be implemented in letter and spirit. "It is an irony that the Supreme Court order as well as the directives of UGC is not being taken into consideration by the Public Service Commission authorities of the state. The Commission is playing with the future of the candidates who had great hopes that they would be employed as Assistant Professors in different subjects once the interview process would have been over," said the candidates while sharing their views with Early Times. Following controversy over the method adopted in awarding PhDs the Supreme Court had on March 26, 2015 issued an order under which it was made clear that people who have completed their PhD on or after June 30, 2009 can apply for the posts of Assistant Professors or lecturers once the same are advertised by the universities and central universities across the country without passing in the NET/SET examination. The apex court also ruled that people who have completed or have been registered for PhD before June 30, 2009 have to pass the NET or SET before they can apply for the posts of lecturers or Assistant Professors. "Despite the fact that all the things have been explained in crystal clear form by UGC and Supreme Court the PSC authorities in Jammu & Kashmir want to follow their own rules. The candidates who have completed their PhD or have been registered for PhD before 30-6-2009 and do not possess the NET/SET qualification should not have been called for interview for Assistant Professor Posts since they did not fulfill the criteria. However, they were called for interview and the whole process became topsy-turvy," said the candidates. The candidates also objected to the proposal that pre June 30, 2009 registered PhD candidates would be given equivalence certificates with those candidates who have been registered for PhD after the cut-off date that is 30-6-2009. They said that since pre- June 30, 2009 registered candidates fulfill only six parameters out of 11 parameters it would be unfair to give certificates of equivalence with the candidates who registered after the cut-off date since they fulfilled all the 11 parameters of the PhD course. The candidates said that since PhD holders are given more weightage as compared to the NET or SET qualifiers it is quite natural that they would figure more than NET or SET qualifiers. They said as such the very purpose of holding the NET/SET examination gets defeated. |
