Water level in Jhelum, other water bodies increases, Lake gates closed | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 5: Water level in river Jhelum and its tributaries and other water bodies has recorded considerable increase due to torrential rains during the past few days though there was no danger of flood. The Gaw Kadal gate of the world famous Dal Lake has been closed as there was apprehension that river water could enter the water body. Torrential rains and melting of snow on the upper reaches due to above normal mercury in the Kashmir valley has resulted in increase in the water level in water bodies. River Jhelum originating in south and passing through summer capital, Srinagar, to north Kashmir before finally entering Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has also witnessed several feet of increase in the water level. However, it was still below normal and there was absolutely no danger of any immediate flood, officials said. However, increase in the water level in the river has forced authorities to shut the gates of Dal Lake at Gaw Kadal. They said since the water level of the river was more than the present level in the Lake, there was apprehension that water may enter the water body. Other water bodies in the Kashmir valley have also witnessed increase in the water level. Meteorological department has predicted wet weather in the valley till April 11. Slight increase in the water level in Jhelum always remained a cause of concern for the people of the Kashmir valley who witnessed devastating floods in September 2014. Lakhs of houses and other structures in the valley, including Srinagar, were damaged in the floods. The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) has already started dredging of the river Jhelum and strengthen its bunds, damaged during the floods. |
