Gun fight rages in Kupwara, 3 militants trapped | | | S Tahir-ul Haq

KUPWARA, Apr 5: A gunfight broke out between security forces and a group of militants today at Dardpora area of Lolab in this North Kashmir district. Sources said that at around 12:30 PM gun shots were heard in the forest area of Dardpora, after which a joint team of Army and SOG Lolab cordoned off the whole area. "There was a movement of 2-3 heavily armed militants in the forest area. A patrolling party was heading towards the forest area after which they challenged the militants who opened heavy volume of fire on them," sources told Early Times. A top police official from Lalpora Kupwara said that a joint team of army's 28 Rashtriya Rifles, 18 RR and SOG cordoned off the Dardpora forest area in the frontier district following specific information about the presence of some militants. The forces as such intensified the cordon and search operation and fired several warning shots towards the suspected spot, the official said. He further said that the militants are believed to be two to three in number hiding inside the dense forests due to which operation has been suspended for a night and will be resumed tomorrow morning. Meanwhile it is learnt from sources that, a live hand grenade was found near a Nullah in Kralpora area of Kupwara district, which was later defused by Bomb Disposal Squad. "After noticing the suspected device this morning police was immediately informed after which they reached the spot and found (hand grenade) in the area," said sources. A senior police official said that a BDS squad was immediately informed about the device following which a team was dispatched to the spot. "It was a live grenade. Bomb disposal squad was pressed into service and the grenade was defused on the spot," the official said. |
