Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 5: Weather woes will continue in Jammu and Kashmir as Western Disturbance (WD) is still active in the region, where border town of Kargil was coldest at minus 1.3 degree minimum temperature. Interestingly Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region was more warmer than Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar. A MeT department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain wet in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region till April 11. There could be isolated, fairly widespread and scattered rain during these days, he predicted. Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed since December last year, was coldest in the region at minus 1.3 degree against yesterday’s 0.8 degree, due to fresh snowfall last night. However, the maximum temperature yesterday’s was 13.9 degree, which was warmer than Srinagar. At Leh the minimum temperature also recorded considerable drop due to snowfall on upper reaches and light showers in the plains. Against yesterdays, 4.4 degree, it was 0.9 degree, he said adding the maximum temperature there was 17.4 degree yesterday. The sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 degree and 4 degree respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours. After recording above normal minimum temperature despite fresh snowfall on upper reaches, including hills surrounding Srinagar, and heavy showers in the plains, people woke up to yet another chilly morning. People continued to wear woolen and warm clothes in the valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, due to cloudy sky coupled with icy cold winds. The maximum temperature was three to five degree below normal yesterday in the valley, barring at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg where it was four notches above normal. However, the minimum temperature at the famed ski resort recorded drop due to fresh snowfall. Against yesterdays 1 degree, it was 0.2 degree despite 24.8 mm rain during the past 24 hours. Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalyas, also recorded drop in the minimum temperature though it was still above normal. Against yesterdays 6.8 degree, it was 3.5 degree, 1.5 notches above normal. Qazigund and Kokernag in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north also received light to moderate rain during the past 24 hours. However, the maximum and minimum temperatures remained above normal. Summer capital, Srinagar, received 3.7 mm rainfall yesterday resulting considerable drop in the temperature as surrounding hills experienced fresh snowfall. The maximum temperature yesterday was 13.2 degree, five degree below normal, which was colder than Leh and Kargil. The minimum temperature in the city was 8.4 degree, more than two notches above normal. MeT spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy and become generally cloudy later in the day in the city where the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 degree and 7 degree respectively during the next 24 hours |
