Despite political jibes from Omar, Mehbooba leads coalition Govt
4/6/2016 12:37:01 AM
Unmindful of political jibes and barbs which were sent by Omar Abdullah, working President of National Conference, to the PDP Chief, Mehbooba accepted the challenge by agreeing to lead the coalition Government in alliance with the BJP. Omar had sent a jibe telling her whether she would chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai which was not mandatory for Mehbooba or for any member of her council of ministers to chant Mehbooba understood the level of political derision Omar had for her because she was fulfilling her father's mission as he had taken the political risk of stitching an alliance with the BJP for the formation of the coalition Government. When Mehbooba Mufti, president of the Peoples Democratic Party, took the oath as the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, it not only ended 11 weeks of political uncertainty. But also removed suspicion which was the result of continued suspense over the formation of the coalition Government..As many as 23 Ministers were sworn in alongside Mufti which indicates that despite the fact that she has allowed the BJP to increase the number of berth in the cabinet from six to eight the overall number has remained 23 which was the number when Mufti Mohd. Sayeed was sworn in as Chief Ministger over a year ago.
A leader with grassroots-level popularity, Mehbooba Mufti turned Peoples Democratic Party into a regional force and emerged from the shadow of her illustrious father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to head Jammu and Kashmir, the first woman Chief Minister of the state.A law graduate, 56-year-old Ms. Mufti took a plunge into mainstream politics of the state in 1996 by joining Congress, along with her father, at a time when militancy was at its peak. She is credited with growth of the PDP with some observers arguing that she outshone her father in connecting with the common people, especially the youths. She was also accused of playing the soft-separatist card.PDP chose the green colour for the party flag and adopted Pen-Inkpot election symbol of the Muslim United Front (MUF) of 1987, but these moves found some resonances on the ground among the Kashmir residents. Heading a PDP-BJP government formed with an alliance between two idealogical extremes, Mufti faces a challenging task ahead as she will strive to carry forward her father's 'healing touch' legacy. Hopes of ending the deadlock were raised when BJP general secretary Ram Madhav arrived in Srinagar in a chartered plane to meet Mehbooba Mufti late in the evening on February 17, but nothing came out of the hour-long meeting. The two moved a mile but both drifted apart
The next high-level contact between the two parties came on March 19 when Mehbooba met BJP president Amit Shah. Again the two parties failed to resolve the issues, forcing the BJP to publicly admit for the first time that no headway could be made on government formation. In fact, several PDP leaders went to extent of saying the prospects of an alliance with the BJP were all but over. However, to everyone's surprise, the PDP president went to meet the Prime Minister three days later and decks were cleared for the formation of the government. Now that Mehbooba has accepted a challenging task and it is hoped that its partner, the BJP, should have no grouse in helping the Chief Minister in resolving various problems confronting the people. Well during the twn months it shared power with the PDP the BJP suffered a major erosion in its vote bank in Jammu region which had elected 25 BJP men to the Assembly. First of all its ministers have to rectify their mistakes and open their doors of their houses and offices for promoting interaction with people. Since Lal Singh has been given a berth in the cabinet he should not repeat behaving like a muscleman. People want results and that alone can silence the critics of BJP and the PDP. Let the coalition Government, under the leadership of a courageous woman, Mehbooba Mufti, take bold decisions which would settle various problems of people.
