Historic Mughal road reopens for light vehicles, Ladakh still cut off | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 24: The Historic Mughal road reopened for light vehicles only despite fresh snowfall while the national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley remained closed since December last year. Meanwhile, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national was through for two-way for passenger vehicles and one-way for heavy vehicles with some restrictions. A traffic police official told that light vehicles only were allowed to ply on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region after remaining closed for more than three months. There was fresh but light snowfall yesterday on the road but we allowed light vehicles, including those carrying passengers at 1000 hrs today the official said. However, no vehicle will be allowed on the road till further orders as the road, with huge snow walls on both sides, is very narrow at several places where two heavy vehicles cannot pass easily. The road was reopened this time about a month earlier. Actually the authorities had announced to put through the road in March as there was less snowfall during winter. However, late snowfall coupled with avalanches and landslides hampered the operation. However, official website and Facebook page of the traffic department, shows that the road is still closed. He said vehicles will ply from Rajouri and Poonch to Srinagar in the morning and from Srinagar in the afternoon. The national highway, linking the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley, remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow, avalanches and slippery road conditions. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintainance of the highway had almost cleared the snow on the highway last month. But fresh snowfall and avalanches delayed the early reopening of the highway, lifeline to Ladakh region. The snow clearance operation is almost over and repair of the road was in progress and the highway will be put through anytime now. The Traffic official said passenger vehicles will continue to ply from both sides on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. However, heavy vehicles will ply on alternative days from Kashmir and Jammu with some restrictions, he said. He said keeping in view the condition of road stretch between Batote and Banihal where width of the road formation at some places has shrunk due sliding, only one way movement of traffic is possible on the highway. He said heavy vehicle will ply from Jammu towards Srinagar today. However, passenger vehicles will ply from both sides. The Traffic officail said that road from Bandipore to border town of Gurez and Synthan-Kishtwar road is also closed for traffic . |
