IPV vacine introduced in Surankot medical block | | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Apr 24: Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Khan, Block Medical Officer (BMO) today introduced Inactivated Polio Virus (IPV) vaccine in Surankot Medical Block by injecting it to 14th week old girl namely Afia Kosar daughter of Mohd Shakkor of village Tarara Wali. The inauguration ceremony was conducted at sub district hospital at Surankot where Dr Parvaiz also gave second doze to 14th week old girl child namely Tabasum d/o Sikander Khan r/o Bella. " The process to provide IPV vaccine to children will continue from today onward.IPV is a shot, given in the leg or arm, depending on age. It may be given at the same time as other vaccines" said Dr Parviaz, BMO. He added oral polio vaccine will continue as per schedule.Children get 4 doses of IPV at these ages of 2 months, 4-months at 6-18 months and booster dose at the age of 4-6 years. Some 'combination' vaccines (several different vaccines in the same shot) contain IPV. Children getting these vaccines may get one more (5th) dose of polio vaccine. This is not a problem. Most adults 18 and older do not need polio vaccine because they were vaccinated as children. But some adults are at higher risk and should consider polio vaccination. Dr Parviaz said the oral polio vaccine tOPV will be replaced with bOPV vaccine from April 25.A vial of IPV vaccine contains either five doses or 10 doses and each dose cost between Rs 120 to Rs 150 and will be provided free of cost. IPV and bOPV are given together this will boost the child immunity. BMO directed the employees engaged with immunization project to use the open vial of IPV within 28 days after opening the vial by clearly writing the date of opening it. "Frozen IPV vaccine must be thrown/discarded as this vaccine needs no 'shake policy' like other vaccines" said BMO. |
