No first-class travel for Babus, meetings in private hotels banned | Govt cuts costs | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 24 :In a move to cut down on unnecessary expenditure on officials, Government has ordered a ban on first class air travel by bureaucrats and directed to make the most of available resources. According to the directions issued by the government, travel expenditure of officials should be regulated so as to ensure that each department remains within the allocated budget for the same. "Within the country, the officers should travel only by economy class regardless of entitlement. In all cases of air travel, the lowest air fare ticket available for entitled class is to be purchased/ procured," says a government order. "Utmost economy shall be observed in organizing conferences/ seminars/ workshops. Only such conferences, workshops seminars, etc. which are absolutely essential, should be held," it reads. The government order says that holding of exhibitions/ fairs/ seminars/ conferences outside the State is strongly discouraged except in the case of exhibition for tourism or handicraft promotion. "There will be a ban on holding of meetings and conferences at private hotels. Government buildings/ premises should be utilized instead." Government has issued instructions in view of the increasing liabilities of various departments as bureaucrats and ministers have spent crores of rupees "unnecessarily" over the years thus putting a huge burden on the state exchequer. Further the government has directed that facility of video conferencing may be used effectively and travel for the purpose of attending meetings should be avoided to the extent possible. The government has also banned officials from making new financial commitments, purchasing new vehicles, creating new posts and holding conferences at five-star hotels. |
