ICDS under scanner for embezzlement | | | Early Times Report
srinagar, Apr 28: The Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) which is one of the largest programs in the country has been under scanner from last several years. There have been frequent reports of embezzlements in scheme at the Anganwari center level and also at the higher levels. Officials in the Social welfare and ICDSC say that the scheme has become a money minting machine for most of the employees both higher and lower rung. "What we mostly observe at the Anganwari centers is that children are being fed few spoons of channa chickpeas (Chana) on any day of the week. However, the officials at respective centers are supposed to follow a particular schedule and feed different varieties like Halwa, Maggi, eggs etc throughout the week to the children. But what we see the week starts with chickpeas and ends with chickpeas only," a senior official who works in Ganderbal district said. There are also reports that Anganwari workers sell the supply to local shopkeepers to fill their pockets. Furthermore, the Anganwari workers are also supposed to provide the nutrition throughout the year, which is not actually followed in Kashmir especially in Kangan Tehsil- where Press Trust of Kashmir received several complaints. "They provide nutrition on first few weeks and the stop it for the rest of the year. Where does this whole stock stocked for the year go? There is no transparency. Whose pockets are being filled?" several officials whose conscience hasn't died questioned. The Program officer of Ganderbal appealed the people if there are any such complaints where the norms are flouted, they should immediately report to his office. "We won't allow anyone to loot public money.
