Dropped from Cabinet, Bukhari goes to Saudi for Umrah | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad ET Report SRINAGAR, Apr 28: Since he was dropped from the Cabinet, former Roads and Buildings Minister Altaf Bukhari has remained inactive in politics and has gone to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah there. Sources close to Bukhari said although he had no plan to go for Umrah this year, but after his name was dropped by the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti from the Cabinet, he decided to take a leave from the politics for some time. "He is in Saudi Arabia these days performing Umrah there," a source close to Bukhari said and added that he was very upset after his name was dropped from the Cabinet and didn't attend any party meeting since then. Mehbooba dropped two cabinet ministers-Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and Javid Mustafa Mir-while Mohammad Ashraf Mir and Abdul Majeed Padroo were minister of state in the previous PDP-BJP government. Their non-inclusion in the Cabinet is believed that PDP President Mehbooba Mufti wants to convey that no "dissidence or indiscipline" will be tolerated in the party. Bukhari is party treasurer and represents Amira Kadal constituency in assembly. Sources said Bukhari was dropped for his closeness to BJP camp during around three month long stalemate on government between allies-PDP and BJP-following demise of Mufti Sayeed. When Mehbooba was being criticized for delaying government formation as she wanted the BJP-led Centre to agree to several demands, Bukhari was allegedly leading a revolt within the party and holding talks with the BJP when her party chief was seeking CBMs over timely implementation of "Agenda of Alliance" with the saffron party. It is widely believed that the threat of a break-up of the party pushed Mehbooba to enter into a re-alliance with the BJP and also forced her to drop demands of time-bound implementation of the "Agenda of Alliance. "Mehbooba Ji was not happy with Altaf Bukhari for sidelining her and holding back door talks with the BJP after Mufti Sayeed's death. Some people close to both Bukhari and PDP President also intervened to convince her to include him in the cabinet which she declined," a PDP insider said. After which, Bukhari conveyed to his workers two days prior to swearing in that he won't be in the new government. However, Bukhari had said he accepts his party's decision and will continue to work for strengthening it and for the Srinagar city. But he nullified the reports that he was leading a pressure group within the party for government formation with the BJP. "I accept the decision of Mehbooba Ji. A year was passed since the polls were held in 2014 and I didn't want people to undergo further hardships. I wanted Mehbooba Mufti to be state's chief minister as was the wish of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed," he had said. |
