SRINAGAR, Apr 29: The Department of Education in the state is not ready to learn a lesson and correct the follies being carried out by them from time to time. The department is all set to host the Education Conclave tomorrow in the summer capital.
An official spokesman said that Directorate of School Education Kashmir is organizing maiden "Educational Conclave" at Sher-I-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) Srinagar on April 30, 2016. The spokesman said that Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar is scheduled to inaugurate the conclave.
The holding of the conclave has already come in for sharp criticism from the stakeholders and they say that the conclave is a 'useless' exercise. The stakeholders say that the money being spent on the conclave could easily be spent on some productive activity in the department or for upgrading the infrastructure in the government schools.
"The educational institutes in the Kashmir valley are falling short of the standards when we talk of the infrastructure. Instead of spending money on a useless exercise like the conclave it would have been prudent to spend the money on improving the infrastructure in the educational institutes in the Kashmir valley," said a group of teachers.
Sources told Early Times that the event would see participation of more than 1,500 officials of the department and they would be given 'training' by the trainers. The event is all set to disturb the educational activities in the educational institutes with students all set to miss the classes on Saturday.
"The government schools in the state receive money on account of library from the students but such activity is seen in very few schools of the valley. The education minister should devote his attention towards this issue instead of holding conclaves like the one being held by the department on Saturday," said sources.
Sources said that lakhs of rupees would be sent on the event with teachers, zonal education officers and other officials of the education department taking part in it.
"The department higher ups day in and day out deliver lecture on completion of syllabus in the educational institutes. However, on ground they take action that defeats this very purpose. Holding of the conclave is an addition to such activities and it is futile to hold such events," said sources.
Sources said that Kashmir valley is always chosen an 'experimental laboratory' for holding such events adding that no such activity takes places in other parts of the state. They said that steps need to be taken so that austere measures are initiated by the department higher-ups and there is no wastage of money.
"Accountability needs to be inculcated in the Department of Education and the officers need to be accounted for the expenditure carried out by them. At times it has been observed that un-necessary expenditure is carried and holding of education conclave is yet another exercise in this regard," said sources.
The teaching fraternity has taken the hosting of event with a pinch of salt. The teachers say that punitive action is taken against them if the results are not up to the standard adding that nobody looks towards the 'follies' of the higher ups of the department.
"Teachers are held accountable for the poor results but nobody makes the officers and officials accountable for their actions. Nobody takes action against the people who resort to the wastage of time and money by holding un-necessary events. The non-action in this regard has made matters worse in the education department," said a teacher on condition of anonymity.
